Tension gripped residents of Omugo community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State on Sunday after gunmen attacked a church during service and abducted several worshippers.
The incident occurred at the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), where members had gathered for their usual Sunday worship before the attackers struck unexpectedly.
Attack During Worship
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen invaded the church premises while the service was ongoing, firing gunshots sporadically into the air.
The sudden attack caused panic among the congregation, forcing worshippers to flee for safety in different directions.
Amid the confusion, the assailants reportedly seized eight worshippers and whisked them away to an unknown location.
Some Victims Escape
In a dramatic turn of events, three of the abducted victims were said to have escaped from their captors shortly after the incident.
However, five others remain in captivity, raising concerns among residents and relatives who are anxiously awaiting their safe return.
Rising Security Concerns
The latest attack has further heightened fears over the growing insecurity in parts of Kwara State and its surrounding regions.
This incident comes just months after a similar attack on a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area, where worshippers were also targeted during a church service before they were later released.
Observers say the repeated targeting of places of worship highlights the urgent need for improved security measures, especially in rural communities.
